Digging Into Data Challenge
We would like to advise our researchers of a new competition just announced by SSHRC: "The Digging Into Data Challenge". Applicants are eligible for up to $300K. Goals are "to promote the development and deployment of innovative research techniques in large scale data analysis; foster interdisciplinary collaboration among social science, humanities, information sciences, computer science and other fields, around questions of text and data analysis; foster international collaboration (between Canada, the UK, Wales and the US); to work with data repositories that hold large digital collections to ensure efficient access."

The Letter of Intent is due March 15th and full applications due July 15th.

Longitudinal Surveys: from Design to Analysis
Statistics Canada's 25th International Methodology Symposium, "Longitudinal Surveys: from Design to Analysis" will take place at the Palais des Congrès in Gatineau, QC, from October 27 to October 30, 2009.

The first day will consist of workshops, while the following days will consist of both plenary and multiple streams of parallel sessions covering a variety of topics. Additional research and results will be presented via poster sessions.

We are soliciting papers related to the several methodological aspects of longitudinal surveys. Your proposal must be submitted by e-mail to: symposium2009@statcan.gc.ca by March 31, 2009. It should include a 250-word abstract (French or English) of the content of the presentation, as well as its title and your full contact information. Closure announcement
The workstations and server at the Research Data Centre at UBC will not be available for use from Monday February 9 through Friday February 13. The server will be replaced and a new desktop image deployed to the workstations during the closure.

Simon Fraser University Research Data Centre
We are pleased to announce the opening of the Simon Fraser University Research Data Centre for researchers with an approved project. The SFU RDC is located in Blusson Hall on the Burnaby Mountain campus of SFU.

Tuesdays 9:00am to 2:00pm
Wednesdays 9:00am to 3:00pm

The SFU RDC currently has the following software applications: SAS, SPSS and S-Plus. Stata may be installed in the near future. If you are interested in working at the SFU RDC please contact Lee Grenon at the UBC RDC office for further information and to make arrangements. Researchers may work at both the SFU RDC and either the UBC or UVic RDCs. The SFU RDC may be used by any RDC researcher regardless of university affiliation.
